Rosie Owen BVSc CertES(Orth) DipECVS MRCVS
Rosie graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2006, inspired to become a vet by her early experiences working as a trek leader in North Wales, where she cared for horses that were injured, lame or unwell. Following graduation, she completed an equine orthopaedic internship at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket before undertaking a surgical residency at Leahurst from 2009 to 2012, where she worked alongside Guy Hinnigan.
Rosie joined Oakhill Equine Vets over 14 years ago, initially thinking it would be a temporary move before returning to Cheshire! She was drawn to Oakhill by its independent ethos, forward-thinking approach and excellent surgical facilities, and has since become an integral part of the team.
Rosie has a particular interest in equine lameness, advanced diagnostic imaging and surgery, especially spinal pain and spinal surgery. She is an RCVS and ECVS Specialist in Equine Surgery, holds an RCVS Certificate in Equine Orthopaedics and an ECVS Diploma in Large Animal Surgery. She is also trained in equine acupuncture and electroacupuncture and has recently been appointed to the ECVS Credentials Committee.
Rosie particularly enjoys investigating challenging cases involving horses that buck, bolt or are difficult to ride, believing these behaviours can often be a sign that something is wrong. She is passionate about getting to the root of the problem, helping horses feel comfortable and improving the relationship between horses and their owners. She takes a holistic approach to every case, considering the horse’s management and training as well as its clinical signs, and always aims to make her patients feel safe and reassured. Kissing spine surgery is another particular passion, and she has helped many horses through this procedure.
Outside of work, Rosie enjoys riding her horse, Spot-Dot, walking her Border Collie, Enfys, playing netball and making time for skiing and spa trips with friends. She is also mum to Millie and John and shares her home with Peppa, a much-loved rescue cat she brought home after finding her abandoned as a kitten.
Rosie is passionate about fundraising for Alzheimer’s charities, inspired by her father’s experience of early-onset Alzheimer’s. She has taken on half marathons and a sprint triathlon to support causes close to her heart, with ambitions to complete a full marathon when her Achilles allows!
