Equine Veterinary Internship Programme

Due to the recent growth in clinic caseload, we are looking for a second intern to join our team, in a 12-month clinic internship position. Working with in-house clinicians (including two ECVS diploma-holding surgeons) and nursing staff, our internship provides structured support to build the intern’s clinical skills.

Oakhill’s internship program offers a fantastic opportunity for a graduate intending to pursue a career in advanced lameness diagnosis and/or equine surgery.

Interns will be involved in diagnostic investigations of clinic admissions and day outpatient appointments as well as providing in-patient treatment/hospital care and surgical assistance. They will be trained in providing pre-, intra- and post-operative care of surgical patients and, during the stud season, will assist with inpatient AI mare scanning and ovulation checks.

Interns are encouraged to provide goals for skills they would like to attain during their year. They will be fully supported to achieve these, with one-to-one mentoring through the RCVS graduate development programme (GDP). Typically, during their 12-months with us we’d expect our intern to become competent in:

  • Diagnostic imaging.
  • Assisting in surgical procedures.
  • Castrations and other minor/routine procedures.
  • Medical investigations.
  • Orthopaedic investigations and treatment.
  • Critical care.
  • Basic ophthalmology.
  • Assisting with anaesthesia.

Our well-established internship has seen many newly qualified veterinary surgeons successfully transition into veterinary life, with the guidance of our experienced team of equine vets. If this sounds like the perfect opportunity for you, call Rosie Owen (Equine Director) on 07714 754116 for a confidential, informal discussion, or alternatively send your CV to to apply.

Located in the heart of Lancashire, our equine clinic is well-established with excellent, spacious facilities. Resources include standing MRI, digital radiography, ultrasonography, endoscopy including gastroscopy, a fully equipped surgical theatre with an induction/recovery box, anaesthesia monitors, standing surgery, surgical laser, purpose built dental stocks and isolation facilities.

As part of a 15-vet equine division you will always have experienced people on hand to offer guidance and support. There are many opportunities to participate in our monthly health and wellbeing sessions and the team regularly get together for social events too.

We have lovely clients and see a diverse mix of patients from competition horses to family ponies, so there’s plenty of opportunity to gain experience. Plus, the equine division has the support and camaraderie of being part of a large, independent practice with small animal and farm divisions.
