Equine Veterinary Internship Programme

Due to the recent growth in clinic caseload, we are looking for a second intern to join our team, in a 12-month clinic internship position. Working with in-house clinicians (including two ECVS diploma-holding surgeons) and nursing staff, our internship provides structured support to build the intern’s clinical skills.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Oakhill’s internship program offers a fantastic opportunity for a graduate intending to pursue a career in advanced lameness diagnosis and/or equine surgery.

Interns will be involved in diagnostic investigations of clinic admissions and day outpatient appointments as well as providing in-patient treatment/hospital care and surgical assistance. They will be trained in providing pre-, intra- and post-operative care of surgical patients and, during the stud season, will assist with inpatient AI mare scanning and ovulation checks.

Interns are encouraged to provide goals for skills they would like to attain during their year. They will be fully supported to achieve these, with one-to-one mentoring through the RCVS graduate development programme (GDP). Typically, during their 12-months with us we’d expect our intern to become competent in:

  • Diagnostic imaging.
  • Assisting in surgical procedures.
  • Castrations and other minor/routine procedures.
  • Medical investigations.
  • Orthopaedic investigations and treatment.
  • Critical care.
  • Basic ophthalmology.
  • Assisting with anaesthesia.
